Bordered to the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the south by the English Channel, Cornwall has just one land border – that with Devon, which sits on the other side of the River Tamar. The county covers an area of 1,376 square miles and has its administrative centre in Truro, which is its only city.
It may be one of the most beautiful areas of the country but it is also one of the poorest, depending for 24% of its economy on the tourist industry.
Districts of Cornwall
There are no real ‘districts’ to speak of – there is inland and coastal but that is really the only division. Torbay on the south coast, facing onto the English Channel, has become known as the English Riviera. The bays are sheltered and the seas calm, particularly popular areas, outside of the Torbay area, are Fowey and Falmouth.
The Atlantic coast to the north and west is dramatic and wild, with towering cliffs and hidden caves; important tourist destinations on this coast are Bude, Polzeath, Watergate Bay, Perranporth, Porthtowan, Fistral Beach, Newquay, St Agnes and St Ives.
Inland is mainly composed of granite uplands; this is where you will find Bodmin Moor – the highest part of Cornwall. The wooded valleys behind the south coast are shady and fertile; home to an assortment of plants that are not found anywhere else within the country.
The largest urban area is at Redruth and Camborne – home of the now defunct tin mining industry. There has been talk recently of reopening some of the tin mines but no specific programme has been announced.
