Altinkum is Turkish for “Golden Sands”, and they weren’t wrong when they named this place. If you like the archetypal golden beach and deep blue sea then this little town, lapped by the Aegean, could be the right location for you. Altinkum Bay is on Turkey’s west coast, around about where the Aegean meets the Med. It is part of the town and district of Didim, a coastal town of 26000 people and home to the ancient city of Didyma with its ruined Temple of Apollo.

Map of Altinkum Turkey

The town’s main industry is tourism although there is some agriculture, the main crops being wheat and cotton. There are plenty of sheep and goats and these are mainly raised for local consumption. Altinkum is a newly built resort, purpose built to cater to the booming popularity of Turkey’s Aegean coast. Most of the building has been low rise apartment blocks surrounding hotels – as opposed to the high rise blocks in some other resorts.

Altinkum has an excellent climate with summer temperatures averaging out in the high 70sF (25C). If you want to live in Altinkum all year round then you should know that winter averages drop to 6 or 7C (45F). There are soft sand beaches on both sides of the town which offer excellent water sports facilities, however they do get crowded in high season.
