Didim is built on the site of the ancient city of Didyma, famed for its ruined temple of Apollo. It is a small town and popular tourist resort in Aydin Province on Turkey’s Aegean coast. Didim lies on the north shore of the Gulf of Gulluk and to the south, across the Gulf, you can see the Bodrum peninsula. It is a small town with a resident population of around 26,000 people. The wider Didim district includes a number of other small towns, including the popular resort of Altinkum.

Tourism is at the heart of the area’s economy although there is some agriculture, the main crops being wheat and cotton, with goats and sheep being reared locally.

Map of Didim Turkey

Didim enjoys a great Mediterranean climate with summer temperatures averaging out in the high 70sF (25C). Winter in Didim is much cooler and average temperatures drop to around 6 or 7C (45F). There are soft sand beaches at Altinkum, Gümüşkum and Sarıkum and these are all very popular and well worth a visit, as long as you don’t mind the crowds in the summer months.

Didim is well served by public transport with the choice of Bodrum-Milas airport as 120kms (75miles) or Izmir airport at 170kms (105miles). Both have regular bus and dolmus (shared taxi) links. It is a quieter resort than some of the other Turkish holiday resorts and is ideal for couples, families and those who are seeking some relaxation.
