Natal, Brazil is the capital of the Rio Grande do Norte state. Situated in north-eastern Brazil it is a bustling city with a population of around 800,000 residents, a number which grows to 1.25 million if you count the Greater Natal area. Visitors and investors alike will be interested to know that Natal is considered by the Institute of Applied Economic Research of Brazil as the safest capital city in the country.
Natal has a great deal to offer the overseas visitor with access to mile upon mile of stunning beaches, all lapped by the clear and warm waters of the mid-Atlantic and all connected by the Via Costeira (Coastal Way). The most famous of the beaches is Ponta Negra which is very popular with visitors and locals alike. The beaches of Pipa and Genipabu are also very popular.
Other reasons to buy property in Natal Brazil include
- Maracajaú, a small beach community about 50kms (30 miles) from the city. Maracajaú is famous for the coral formations (locally called "Parrachos de Maracajaú") located about 7 kilometers off the coast, which form natural pools of beautiful crystalline waters;
- Parque das Dunas, the second largest urban park in Brazil;
- The impressive Newton Navarro bridge;
- Forte dos Reis Magos (fortress of the three wise men), an ancient fortress dating back to 1598.
Natal enjoys excellent transport connections with the rest of Brazil and is one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Most foreign property investors who consider investing in Natal are interested in beach front properties. These tend to cluster along the Via Costeira and due to the recent boom in tourism prices are starting to rise.
£230,000 will buy you a beachfront house in the popular town of Caraubas Bay. You will get a well-built 4 bedroom home, close to the town centre with elevated ocean views and a decent parcel of land. £290,000 will get you a luxury cliff top villa in the same area.
There are bargains to be had with more established properties, for example a three bed overlooking the beach for just £100,000 found while writing this article. “3 large bay doors open up onto the oceanfront patio and swimming pool. There are 2 bedrooms in the main house plus guesthouse each equipped with double bed, air conditioning and 2 with on-suite bathroom. There is a good sized back garden and complete privacy as the property is lined with thorn bushes forming a natural barricade.”
Move a bit further up the coast and the same amount of money (c. £290,000) will buy an amazing fully furnished mansion with 6 bedrooms and a pool and a huge stretch of landscaped garden; and this in the very popular diving resort of Maracajaú . As the tourism increases along the Natal coastline the local property market has yet to stabilise, meaning there are bargains about for those who look hard enough.
Building plots are also of particular interest in the area. You can pick up a beachfront plot with full permission from as little as £75,000, although most of them start at about £140,000.
Natal is an upcoming tourist destination and the boom here is likely to continue. For the would-be overseas property investor, now would be a very good time to take a better look at it.
